Last April, fourteen-year-old Jennifer Nieves of Lynwood had been battling a life-threatening medical condition and consequently spent a lot of time at home. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, Broyhill Furniture, and Design Center Furniture Jennifer’s wish for a modern bedroom makeover came true with a surprise reveal on Thursday, April 14, 2011.
Through a national alliance with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Broyhill Furniture helped to grant 50 furniture and room-makeover wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions across the country. Room makeovers are a popular wish request for wish kids; the Make-A-Wish Foundation fulfills more than 400 room-makeover wishes each year.
“Once we found out about the amount of furniture-related wishes the Make-A-Wish Foundation receives, we knew that Broyhill was in a position to help on a national level,” said Mindi Brothers, Director of Marketing for Broyhill. “All kids want a special room of their own; Broyhill put smiles on the faces of many children with life-threatening medical conditions last year with furniture they will enjoy with their friends and family for years to come.”
Jennifer told Make-A-Wish® volunteers what she hoped for in her new room and asked that the specifics remain a surprise until her wish is granted. Volunteers surprised Jennifer with the big reveal on Thursday, April 14 at 6 p.m. when she saw her newly redecorated room for the first time. In addition to the furniture she picked out from Broyhill retailer Design Center, Modani Furniture has donated a Galaxy Chair – a modern design lounge chair that hangs from the ceiling.
This new bedroom is also special in another way; it will be Jennifer’s first bedroom of her own. Since Jennifer was diagnosed with brain cancer, she has suffered from seizures. Up until the completion of this room, she has been sharing a room with her mom so she could be watched over. Thankfully, Jennifer is now in remission and is looking forward to her new space – a place where she can make new memories.
“A wish is a chance for a child like Jennifer to take control over an aspect of her life,” said Breena Gold, president and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. “Because of her medical condition, Jennifer has to spend a lot of time indoors and it is very important for her room to be one of her favorite places. Our national alliance with Broyhill will help the Make-A-Wish Foundation bring joy to the lives of many wish kids across the country.”
“We feel that providing comfortable living spaces for children with life-threatening medical conditions will assist them in maintaining their confidence and inner strength through medical challenges,” said Brothers.
